THE MEDIEVAL WORLDVIEW IN THE TRANSLATIONS OF THE “HILDEBRANDSLIED” INTO RUSSIAN

Abstract

The article discusses the translations by A. A. Gugnin and T. Ya. Sulina of the old German literary monument the “Hildebrandslied” into Russian. Special attention is paid to the specifics of the medieval worldview which is reflected in this heroic lay. The difficulties of conveying the medieval worldview in translations of the “Hildenbrandslied” are due to the differences in cultural contexts and linguistic structures, which requires the translator not only to be lexically accurate but also to have a deep understanding of the historical period during which the poem was created. The article focuses on the importance of the context of the epoch not only for a more accurate translation but also for a possible interpretation of the realities of medieval society and monuments of medieval culture.
