THE GENRE CHARACTER OF THE “FIFTY-YEAR OLD MAN” SHORT STORY BY J.V. GOETHE: A MORALISTIC SHORT STORY INTO A NOVELLA

Abstract
The genre peculiarities of an inset short story in Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship (1829) by J.V. Goethe are analyzed. A long period of creation led to the changes in subject area, problem, and formal organisation of the text. A moralistic story illustrating the main idea of the novel (self-denial principle) turned into a novellistic narrative with the protagonist realizing her inward nature in the limelight. The genre ambiguity of the story made it impossible to bring it to a close as a self-contained work of literature, and the author had to include the characters of the short story into the novel storyline.
