COMPOSITIONAL FEATURES OF THE EVOLUTION OF THE SILHOUETTE OF THE CITY OF POLOTSK IN THE LATE XVII – LATE XIX CENTURIES

Abstract

This article presents some results of research and analysis of the iconographic and literary sources to identify the characteristics of the evolution of the silhouette of Polotsk, and also traced the main stages of its transformation during the period from the late seventeenth to the late nineteenth centuries. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the continuity of the composite system of high-rise dominants in the historic part of the city, including its spatial display in the layout. The research identified three stages of the intensive evolution of silhouette and style features of its architectural image. Architectural-compositional expressiveness, originality and integrity of the silhouette of ancient Polotsk make it meaningful and valuable for the history of architecture, and tourism.
