Abstract
Fictional peculiarities of F. Schiller’s ballad ‘Das verschleierte Bild zu Sais’ are studied. In this work a special role is given to the image of goddess Isis. It allows the author to depict the main categories of the Enlightenment (Nature, Reason) and introduce his thoughts about cognition and some abilities for arriving at the truth. Isis’s veil is a symbol of dual nature which embodies secret knowledge, draws a boundary line between the real and the metaphysical worlds, states a potential danger for a person. Several versions of the ballad interpretation are considered. Involving a number Schiller’s theoretical and late fictional works a correlation of fate and freedom in his aesthetic program of Weimar Classicism period is pointed out.
