Abstract

We consider the last cycle of poems by Stefan George “The New Kingdom” (“Das Neue Reich”, 1928), in which the German poet appends the myth of The Master and his disciples, the Eternal Poetry, or Eternal Youth. A departure from the installation “art for art’s sake” and the desire to transform reality in the spirit of the Enlightenment – “the road to freedom is through beauty” (F. Schiller) – have largely determined the creative evolution of the German symbolist and the creation of the aesthetic Union “Circle of Stefan George”. Appeal to the hymn and national song in the cycle “The New Kingdom” has expanded the boundaries of George’s myth: the first genre form, rooted in the tradition of philosophical hymn of Klopstock and Hölderlin allowed with brilliant precision and depth to reflect the chaos of the oppressive reality and to offer an alternative path of further development; the second form allowed to focus on the search for fundamental principles of being, refracted in the magical act of creation, and on the very figure of the Poet contemplating about the meaning of life, its inevitable end and immortality of the poetic word.
