Abstract
The article explores the genre peculiarity of the French literary autobiography of ХХ – ХХI centuries based on the «African» by J.-M.G. Le Clézio. The main accent is made on the way conventional traits of a traditional genre of the autobiography – the autobiographical pact, a narration about private life of the author of the autobiography, the chronological sequence, a primary continuity of a narration – are transformed in the composition of the novel. The conclusion is, that “African” by Le Clézio is an original summary of the novelist’s long-term reflections about life, family relations, educational problems, western civilization, treating the former colonial people with hostility. Notably, the rupture between the author’s plan and the genre guideline to disclose the author’s “self” are determined by the essay technics.
