Abstract

The article reveals semantic characteristics of Belarusian and English somatic phraseological units. Among the thematic groups singled out in the material analyzed such as personal description, activity description, object or phenomenon description, the first one is most widely spread in the semantics of the material taken for the analysis. Detailed semantic analysis of the units with productive and highly productive somatic components shows domination of such thematic subgroups as description of behaviour and description of state of a person. Nominativeness, symbolism, figurativeness and cultural relevance are defined as the specific features of somatic phraseology in the languages compared in the article. The greater part of somatic phraseologisms in Belarusian and English languages (93 % і 95 % respectivly) belongs to the group of the nominative units. It is noted that only nominative units in a broad sense can function as tropes or figures. So the specificity of the nominative somatic phraseologisms in both languages consists in 1) their ability to name objects, actions, phenomena in a descriptive and figurative – way, fixing and rendering their meaning; 2) their definite connectedness with the processes of perception but not of reflection of the surrounding world.
