THE PRESENT TENSE: THE INTERPRETATION OF ITS STATUS IN LANGUAGE

Abstract
The article considers the principles of close interconnection of language phenomena and human thinking. It reveals the interconnection between the physical present of the speaker and the grammar category of tense. The researcher analyzes grammar and physical aspects of the moment of speaking. The brief review of theories which interpret the status of present tense in French grammar is made. Morphonological theories explain the peculiarities of present tense by the absence of phonologic oppositions. Psychological theories connect meanings of the form with the speaker’s actuality. The statement theory gives the leading role to the conditions of communication. The given work determines the role of the speaker in the formation of present tense meaning in a statement. Correlating physical present moment and the grammar form of its expression, the decisive role is given to the speaker who can make the present tense of a minimal duration or expand it to its maximum. The author describes the three types (narrow, enlarged and large) of present tense depending on situational, spatial and subjective factors.
