Abstract
The article, based on the material of the historical novel by Jan Kontrimovich-Oginsky «In the rays of glory», examines the artistic reception of the military events of the second half of the XVI century – the campaign of the King of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Stefan Batory to Polotsk and the capture of the city in 1579 as part of the final stage of the Livonian War. The specificity of the author's interpretation of the historical material is noted, the historiographic source that forms the basis of the story is revealed, the influence of the National stereotype that manifested itself in the selection of facts for writers and the features of their artistic translation is taken into account. Attention is also paid to compositional techniques that allowed J. Kontrimovichts-Oginsky to combine two separate episodes of the then history into a unity: an attempt to organize an attempt on the life of the Polish king and the leadership of S. Batory assault on Polotsk. The main methods of quarreling of artistic images are highlighted (idealization, artistic parallelism etc.).
