Abstract
Creative activity of any author cannot be completely free from the influence of both preceding and contemporary literary tradition. Jane Austen was not an exception to this rule and one of the literary styles which strongly influenced her creative activity was pre-romanticism. Gothic novel is considered to be the literary form which the author did not accept, and therefore criticized and parodied. Nevertheless a thorough analysis allows to single out other aspects of Gothic influence on Jane Austen’s literary texts. This impact contributed to the formation of the author’s unique individual style, as well as to the formation of the ingenious creative methods, which she introduced into the contemporary British literature tradition.
