CITY NAME OF BELARUSIAN-RUSSIAN BORDERLAND IN URBANONYMIC REFLECTION: SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES

Abstract

The features of formation and functioning of the Belarusian border area urbanonyms formed from the names of cities were investigated. Similarity of the Belarusian and Russian border urbanonymikons were determined. Regional specificity of border urbanonymy is detected by comparing urbanonym systems through the West to the East.


The conclusion made concerning border urbanonymy based on both Belarussian and Russian town names is as follows: border urbanonymy is the specific language layer expressing people’s history and culture by specific way. It is alleged: An obvious specificity of the border urbanonymikons is determined by names formed from the names of neighboring country settlements and its capital located near the border because nowadays the economical development of cities requires the establishment of economical relationships with closest border settlements and extension of their geographical contacts.
