AMERICAN SOLDIERS’ NARRATIVE AND PROSE ABOUT WORLD WAR I: THE GENERAL AND THE PECULIAR (ON THE EXAMPLE OF ‘ECHOES FROM OVER THERE’)

Abstract
Soldiers’ narrative as a representation of creative abilities of a typical military man is studied. Alongside with some professional writers those authors depicted their impressions born by the participation in World War I. They hoped to draw social attention to the fate of veterans. Conceptual issue for both prose writers and soldier narrators was the following: to portray the image of war able to destroy some illusions and stereotypes. In both cases narration is connected with the specific war mode of life and army discipline. Some soldier narrators praised military preparatory machine and routine which helped to survive. But such ‘gentlemen drivers’ as Jh. Dos Passos, E.E. Cummings and E. Hemingway believed that military service was an ultimate way to enslave a person. Attitudes to the enemy were different: a soldier did not hurry to forget about the image of a German as an antagonist who was looking forward to killing a person.
