Abstract

The article reveals the specificity of national self-awareness in the urban space of the American novel based on T. Dreiser’s “Sister Carrie”. Every city is a sociocultural formation filled with different types of human activities. The city performs various functions. That is why it has become the object of interdisciplinary study. The study of the topos of the city is an urgent problem in modern American studies. T. Dreiser demonstrates the transformation of the USA from agrarian to industrial society with the help of the image of Chicago and New York. The city space is divided into the central parts for the rich and the suburbs for the poor. The cities are a synecdoche of America, where all the spheres of life are demonstrated. Every person, who moves to a city, hopes to find happiness and prosperity, but harsh reality is always hiding behind this dream.
