Abstract

The article focuses on the second plot line of W. Shakespeare’s tragedy “King Lear.” It analyses Gloucester’s suicidal attempt in the 6th scene of act IV. The article touches upon the problem of suicide in Shakespeare’s tragedy specifying the reasons for Gloucester’s choice, the author’s attitude to it, religious, medical and philosophical views on suicide in Elizabethan England. Special attention is given to the method of the suicidal attempt. The article takes into consideration some critical essays on the suicidal idea in “King Lear” (by A.C. Bradley, W.G. Knight, A. Kettle etc.). The analysis given shows the meaning of Gloucester’s suicidal attempt in the frame of the tragedy.
