WOMEN’S CLOTHING AS SOCIAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTIC OF A LITERARY CHARACTER (BY EXAMPLE OF JANE AUSTEN’S NOVELS)

Abstract
Clothing has always been something more than a way of protection from weather conditions. It is also a social characteristic, something which can give other people information about the personality of its owner. As Jane Austen gave much attention to the questions of psychology and behavioral motivation, she could not but concentrated on the characters’ attitude towards clothing and accessories. This article contains results of analyses of different characters’ attitude to their and other characters’ looks, dresses, and outfits. Examples are taken from different Austen’s novels, from early works such as “The Beautiful Cassandra” to the last completed novel “Persuasion”.
