THE EVOLUTION OF ECOLOGICAL CONSCIOUSNESS OF ERNEST HEMINGWAY

Abstract
The article analyses the evolution of Ernest Hemingway’s ecological consciousness on the basis of biographical data, as well as autobiographical works “Green Hills of Africa” and “Under Kilimanjaro”. The definition of “ecological consciousness” is presented and the influence of childhood and middle-age crisis on its formation is emphasized. Studied works allow us to conclude that Ernest Hemingway’s consciousness has undergone the transformation from egocentrism to ecocentrism, from the desire to dominate nature and subdue it to overwhelming desire to become a part of the archaic society, not separating themselves from the nature. The civilized white man is considered to be a threat to wildlife. The manifestation of love for animals undergoes a change: from killing cleanly to protecting and admiring them.
