Abstract

The article deals with the irrationality of the rational totalitarian thinking paradigm based on rational ideological constructs that led to the crisis of civilization and the destruction of the humanistic concept of man. The artistic interpretation of this phenomenon is presented in M. Amis’s novels «Time’s Arrow» and «The Zone of Interest» by way of portraying the industrial and systematic extermination of people in concentration camps. The article deals with M. Amis’s depiction of the fascist ideology as an ideology of violence and insanity that brings out animality in man and calls forth the self-destruction instinct. M. Amis regards fascism as total antiutopia, a regime that reversed morality, humanity, culture, and rationality, turned order into chaos, and announced murder, torture and persecution as necessary and beneficial for mankind. The usage of the time reversal stylistic device symbolizes the unrealizable desire to reverse the trajectory of mass murders and cancel shameful war crimes.
