THE THIRTY YEARS’ WAR AND ITS PERCEPTION IN GERMAN LITERATURE

Abstract
The perception of the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648) – the biggest conflict of the XVIIth century – in German literature is investigated. German Baroque literature corresponds to the tragedy of the period. The national catastrophe is interpreted in the spirit of Christian Stoicism with extensive use of two antithetical ideas – “vanitas” and “carpe diem”. The Thirty Years’ War acts as a demarcation line between the literature of the first and the second half of the XVIIth century. We can trace the perception of the Thirty Years’ War through historic and critical, as well as dramatic, lyric, and epic works. In the documentary prose by F. Schiller, R. Huh, and H. Mann, the factual material tends to acquire emotional expressiveness.
