Abstract

The article deals with the problem of the English society crisis of the XIX century, which manifested in acute confrontation between the two social classes: capitalists (the “rich”) and workers (the “poor”). Understanding of the problem is presented on the basis of analysis of stories “A Christmas Carol” and “The Chimes” by Charles Dickens. The author analyzes the ways out of this situation, which are implemented in these literary works through the form of a fairy-tale. Such artistic techniques as magic, the character’s moral transformation, the triumph of Good over Evil, implement the idea of achieving peace between classes by reformation of the “rich” and cultivating persistence and patience in the “poor”.
