METONYMY AS A MEANS OF EXTENSION OF COMPOSITIONALITY OF LEXICAL UNITS (A CASE STUDY OF ENGLISH NOMINAL COMPOUNDS)

Abstract
The paper presents the results of the research which aim is to reveal the types of possible patterns of metonymical transposition in English N+N compounds which are based on partonimical relations: plastic window frame → plastic window, oak clock body → oak clock. The study results allow to argue that the type of an implicit metonymical transposition depends on the profiling of latent markers in the meaning of the head noun which reflect the knowledge of partial segmentation of the denoted object.
