Abstract
The article deals with the specific features of historical past narration in Nathaniel Hawthorne's short works. These features include lack of history idealization, unbiased narration of historical events and fair description of historical personalities, use of psychologism when describing the characters of his tales, rejection to consider any historic event as a central point of a narrative. It makes sense to say that Nathaniel Hawthorne's contemporaries had quite the contrary views on history. Special emphasis is put on «The Legends of the Province House» (the group of 4 short stories treating the American Revolutionary War) analysis. They haven't been studied as a group of related stories yet though they are set in the frame and interrelated.
