Abstract
There is a tendency to analyze Jane Austen’s literary works as strongly connected with the literary traditions of the Enlightenment and romanticism. Nevertheless it is rather logical to take into account those traits which are characteristic of the sentimentalist aesthetics as well, because it was widely spread and popular in the period when the author started her creative activity. The influence of the sentimentalist literary tradition on Jane Austen’s creative works is complex and ambiguous. It was the source of most of her parodying works, where the author emphasized those literary methods which she considered unacceptable, and at the same time helped her develop deep psychologism in her mature novels.
