Abstract
This article examines the problem of racial discrimination and the struggle of black citizens of the USA for civil rights. The analysis is based on the works of the African American writer James Baldwin of 1940-60s, which raise issues of racial and national identity and most clearly reflect the events of the civil rights movement in the United States. The position of the writer regarding the situation of African Americans in America, the role of the Negro church as a social institution as well as the reception of James Baldwin by Soviet readers in the 1960s are considered.
