TRANSITION FROM THE MIDDLE AGES TO THE NEW TIME: MATERIAL AND SPIRITUAL COMPONENTS

Abstract
The 16th century was a period of profound transformations in European society. The transformations affected political, economic, and spiritual life. This was a period of transition from the Middle Ages to modernity. The article deals with main aspects of this transition. The article concentrates on demographic, political, economic and religious aspects of the 16th century as a transition period from the Middle Ages to modernity. Military and cultural changes, beginning of European expansion and colonization of newly discovered territories are stressed. Several aspects of the social organization of the period are touched upon. The article states complexity and inconsistency of the transformations occurring in the XVI century and adherence to previous modes of life, which makes the process of transformation more painful.
