Abstract

The article analyzes in detail the novel Rabbit, Run (1961), as well as the stories Ace in the Hole (1954) and Tomorrow and Tomorrow and So Forth (1959) by John Updike in order to identify the features of the functioning of the running away motive, one of the main motives for the work of Updike and American literature in general. It is the running to nowhere, ‘lost’ heroes of Ace in the Hole and Tomorrow and Tomorrow and so Forth became the prototypes of Rabbit, the hero of Updike’s most famous novels about Harry Angstrom, living in a state of eternal escape from society, family and himself.
