VERBAL TECHNIQUES OF MANIPULATIVE PERSUATION IN TEXT SPEECHES OF BRITISH POLITICAL LEADERS

Abstract
The article analyzes the text speeches of British political leaders and is aimed at the identification of the most frequently used manipulative techniques on the recipient. In particular, the repertoire of multilevel means of speech manipulation has been identified, their percentage indicators, as well as linguo-pragmatic characteristics, have been revealed. On the morphological level such means of manipulative persuasion as the use of the personal pronouns “we” and “I”, various types of temporal-aspectual verb forms with stylistic coloring have been distin-guished. The specified means on the lexical level comprise the use of lexical contamination, phraseological units, neologisms, terms, and jargonisms. On the syntactical level rhetorical questions and constructions with humorous effect have been recognized. The paper also considers a number of particular techniques, due to the target con-stituency of the manipulative process.
