MERONYMS OF MODERN ENGLISH IN LIGHT OF THE THEORY OF GRAMMATICALIZATION

Abstract
The article deals with the problem of lexical systematicity – meronymic semantic relations in modern Eng-lish. The system of meronymic nouns is considered here, their classification is offered and an attempt is made to interpret the heterogeneity of the meronymic system in the light of grammaticalization theory. The research is based on 1577 English meronyms, which form three subsystems: holo-meronyms, quasi-meronyms and mer-onyms proper. The latter comprise a motley group of nouns with a broad categorical generalized meaning. The study reveals a correlation between the grammaticalization degree of a meronym and its contextual depend-ence, vague conceptual content.
