“TRYING TO WARN…”: CHERNOBYL IN THE NOVEL “CLOUD” OF GUDRUN PAUSEWANG

Abstract
This article is about the problems and poetics of the novel “Die Wolke” (“The Cloud”, 1987) of the well-known German writer G. Pausewang. The work was written after the Chernobyl disaster in the USSR, but the author intentionally moved the nuclear accident, described in it, to the German territory. The book is primarily addressed to the young readers, but also is interesting for adult audience dealing with issues of individual and State responsibility, man and humanity fates concerning the technological progress, freedom and conformity. Based on a particular story, the novel has a preventive and predictive nature and in this sense is connected with other works of German writers about Chernobyl.
