Abstract
The article deals with the War of Independence in the works of Washington Irving. It offers a short historical overview essential to understanding the place of this theme in Irving’s literary heritage. It takes into account Irving’s short stories based on American past and his biography of George Washington. Much attention is paid to the Revolutionary background of the famous tales “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle”. In “The Life of George Washington” special emphasis is made upon the character of General Washington and Irving’s influence on the tradition of worshipping him in American culture.
