Abstract

The main aim of the article is to consider N. Hawthorne’s views on such issues as slavery, the abolitionist movement and the American Civil War. It is emphasized that the writer’s opinion didn’t coincide with that of the majority of his contemporaries. Though N. Hawthorne didn’t support the institution of slavery he forbore from active participation in the antislavery movement what can be explained by writer’s disagreement with violent ways of struggle, his doubts in that movement expediency, and his distrust of any reforms. Special emphasis is placed on N. Hawthorne’s essay “Chiefly About War Matters”, where the writer condemned the civil war, drew attention to destructive effects of any war upon nature and an individual.
