Abstract
This article explores the specifics of recruitment among state peasants in the Vitebsk Governorate of the Russian Empire from 1831 to 1861. The main difference between state peasants' recruitment obligations and those of landowners' peasants was the rather strict regulation of recruitment queue formation by Russian law. Key factors influencing the formation of the recruitment queue included the number of workers in the family, law-abidingness, and financial situation. This system was not perfect. It was characterized by numerous violations by peasants and officials. Overall, the recruitment queue formation procedure for state peasants was similar to that of Christian bourgeois. This system ensured a relatively high level of state control compared to that of landowner peasants.
