Abstract

The article analyzes the well-known translations of the “Nibelungenlied” into Russian, made by M.I. Kudryashev and Y.B. Korneev. The translation of the Middle High German epic is a difficult task. On the one hand, it is necessary to preserve the poetic form, on the other hand, one should respect the sense, considering the specifics of medieval consciousness. Special attention is paid to such concepts as êre (honor), triuwe (loyalty), as well as muote (way of thinking, state of mind, behavior). The problem of translation lies in the fact that the basic concepts of medieval culture in the original language are very capacious, in contrast to their Russian equivalents, and have no direct analogs in modern culture.
