Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the composition, genesis and case government of prepositions in the Old High German period of the development of the German language (8th–11th centuries). As a result of the analysis of lexicographic sources, a corpus of prepositions was determined, including 32 units, which reflects a developed system of function words. The genesis of the oldest prepositions from adverbs and their parallels in Greek, Latin and Gothic languages are revealed. Orthographic variability is established for most prepositions. The peculiarities of case government of Old High German prepositions have been revealed: with the ability of prepositions to combine with four cases (genitive, dative, accusative, instrumental), the absolute dominance of the accusative and dative cases has been established. The results of the work contribute to the study of the grammatical system of ancient Germanic languages and are of interest to specialists in the field of historical linguistics, Germanic studies and diachronic syntax.
