ON THE STATE OF BINARITY IN THE CONTEMPORARY FRENCH VOCALISM

Abstract
This article is dedicated to the issue of changes in the modern French vocal system based on discourse by French public figures in debates, interviews and talk shows on socio-political topics. The article provides an analysis of the main observed tendencies, as well as the presence or absence of their codification in academic French dictionaries. We conclude that there is a redistribution of French nasal vowels according to labialization ~ non-labialization in favor of establishing a binary opposition. Additionally, there is a strengthening of the tendency to neutralize the opposition based on the degree of openness ~ closure for vowels /ɛ/ ~ /е/, thus reducing the phonemic significance of this feature for French vowels. The consolidation of these tendencies is gradually reflected in authoritative French dictionaries such as Larousse and Le Robert, which indicates a flexibility and expansion of the modern pronunciation norm.
