IN SEARCH OF NATIONAL HERO: «CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS» BY WASHINGTON IRVING

Abstract
The article deals with Washington Irving’s part in constructing the image of Christopher Columbus in the US culture. It studies the history of writing Columbus’s biography, the way it was accepted by Irving’s contem-poraries and later generations of readers, its impact on the cultural and political spheres of American life. The article demonstrates the ambiguity of created image and its influence on the formation of national identity of American people. The genre of the book is also considered. The recent works dealing with the reassessment of Irving’s literary legacy are briefly analyzed. Besides, the article tackles the problems of the destruction of Columbus’s myth in Western culture.
