THE CRITICISM OF THE “MIDDLE CLASS” AS A THEMATIC PECULIARITY OF J. FOWLES’ WORKS

Abstract
The feeling of hostility to and non-participation in the “middle class” is one of the fundamental circumstances that form the thematic peculiarity of Fowles’ works. The author’s strong desire to get away from the narrow-minded majority and demonstrate his belonging to the elite minority transformed into narcissistic withdrawal and self-importance, and called forth some echoes of an inferiority complex, a delusion of grandeur, and envy to the higher class. His opposing the minority (the intellectual elite) to the majority (thoughtless philistines) is consonant with Hera-clitus’s theory about the division of people into hoi polloi and hoi aristoi, as well as with J. Ortega-Y-Gasset’s idea of the division of humanity into the class of self-improving and responsible personalities and that of passive and limited average people, and with the branches of Zen Buddhism – “Great Vehicle” and “Inferior Vehicle”. In his works Fowles also deprecated the ordinariness and platitude of consciousness which are inherent in all classes.
