Abstract

The article deals with the study of the pragmatic function of English Continuous forms in author’s speech in the prose of the Modern English Period. The form carries out its expressive function in combination with the elements of the context specially arranged by the author to achieve a certain pragmatic effect. The lexical means are evaluative nouns, adjectives and adverbs, verbs denoting mental perception and emotional state. Among the morphological means the article mentions concentration of Continuous forms in one and the same context, as well as the contrast of Continuous with Indefinite verb forms. It was found out that the form under analysis takes part in revealing (bringing forward) various pragmatic shades such as melancholy, disillusion, repentance, astonishment, alert, worry, apprehension, fear, confusion, irony, disapproval, criticism, friendliness, sincerity, sympathy.
