PECULIARITIES OF THE CREATION AND FUNCTIONING OF THE SYMBOL “STRANGER” IN THE POETIC COLLECTION OF STEPHAN GEORGE “THE YEAR OF THE SOLE”

Abstract

Stephan George (1868 – 1933) is one of the most prominent representatives of the German symbolism, impressionism, neoromanticism, aestheticism; his impact on cultural life of Germany is considered to be incredible. The poetic collection “The Year of the Sole” (“Das Jahr der Seele”, 1898) is believed to be the best of the early lyric poetry of the German poet. This article shows the peculiarities of the creation and functioning of the focus symbol “Stranger” in the symbolist paradigm of the mentioned above poetic collection. All of the constituents of the given structure are in contextual relationship with the symbol “Stranger” which expresses the Sole of The World and the World Poetry and hints at transcendental. The lyric image is transformed into a symbol by means of suggestion, neologisms, anzhanbemans and sound instrumentation of the verse. The symbol of “Stranger” quite to a big extent defines the artistic originality of the collection in question to be characteristic of the following features: ambivalent character of the poetic reality which borders among dynamics and statics, synthesis and disintegration, hope and despair; the poet’s move of the thought leads to the naming of reality; extension of the sense field of symbols by means of suggestive influence.
