WASHINGTON IRVING AND WALTER SCOTT: TO THE PROBLEM OF INTERCONNECTION

Abstract
The article is devoted to the problem of interaction between two outstanding writers of the XIXth century Walter Scott and Washington Irving. The history of their meeting, the development of friendship, Scott’s participation in Irving’s literary career, the perception of each other’s works and personalities are described in the article. Particular attention is paid to Scott’s role in the formation of Irving as a romantic writer. Irving became interested in folklore under Scott’s influence. Later he enriched American literature with the legendary material it lacked. Irving’s book “Abbotsford” (1835) formed the basis for some important conclusions about the interaction of the writers in question. The book has not attracted much critical attention though it is also significant as Irving’s contribution to Walter Scott’s image created by his contemporaries.
