DECONSTRUCTION OF SHAKESPEARE’S UNIVERSE IN GLORIA NAYLOR’S NOVEL “MAMA DAY”

Abstract
The article discusses the intertextuallinks between Shakespeare’s plays and Gloria Naylor’s novel “Mama Day”. Special emphasis is given to Naylor’s adaptation and transformation of the images and motifs borrowed from Shakespeare’s romantic drama “The Tempest” as well as from the Bible. It is stated that the novel “Mama Day” is a postcolonial feminist revision of canonized Western texts which subverts the andocentric hierarchies, exposes misogynistic and racist ideologies, and develops an openly polemical attitude towards patriarchal values that dominate male-written classics. In her novel Gloria Naylor creates an alternative Utopian universe based on feminine values and age-old traditions.
