WASHINGTON IRVING IN CONTEMPORARY RESEARCH: IN SEARCH OF NOVELTY

Abstract
The article is devoted to the problem of researching into the works of the American writer Washington Irving. Principal attention is paid to the critical and biographical studies made by American, Russian and Belarusian scientists in the latest decades. Besides, the article offers an overview and a brief analysis of the major studies of the XIXth and XXth centuries. This retrospective view gives a clearer picture of the character and direction of the special interest in Irving. It also helps to evaluate his contribution to the development of American national literature as seen by the representatives of different generations, schools and cultures. Irving’s biography and works have been thoroughly researched in American literary science. However, the beginning of the XXIth century shows the revival of the interest in his personality and heritage. In Russian literary criticism Irving has traditionally been paid attention to in the histories of American literature and studies of American romanticism.
