THE ARTISTIC FEATURES OF ANN CARSON’S LITERARY WORKS

Abstract

This article examines the artistic features of the literary works by a Canadian writer and poet Anne Carson (born in 1950). Carson’s poetry is considered an example of a unique genre synthesis: it combines the elements of intimate and philosophical lyrics and a range of non-fiction genre forms, including scientific and popular science genres. It is argued that her works serve as the means of searching for form and expression, and create new examples of connecting art and science. Anne Carson’s poetry is deeply rooted in her own biography, yet its autobiographical nature is often relative. Particular attention is paid to such characteristics of her works as intertextuality and intermediality. The primary intertextual field of Anne Carson’s poetry is classical (Ancient Greek and Latin) literature, but references to the works of later authors are also frequent, which, in turn, are combined with fiction and biographical facts in her works. Anne Carson’s creative search leads her to utilize the means and elements of other arts, which contribute to the exploration of the poet’s main themes – loneliness, otherness, discrimination and non-acceptance, loss and desire.
