Abstract

The article presents a study of some evil characters in the trilogy ‘The Lord of the Rings’ by a famous British writer, philologist, medievalist, Oxford Professor John Reuel Ronald Tolkien. There has been studied the influence of Anglo-Saxon and Old Norse epic tradition on the genesis of these personages, represented by Barrow-wights and Nazgûls. The images of draugr or aptrgangr and Grendel from early medieval epic literature are viewed as possible prototypes for Tolkien’s evil characters. The parallels between Tolkien’s characters and those of saga and epic literature are studied by the means of descriptive and comparative method of scientific research.
