PRIMARY EDUCATION ON THE BELARUSIAN LANDS IN THE 19TH – EARLY 20TH CENTURIES (ON THE EXAMPLE OF CHURCH SCHOOLS)

Abstract

On the example of church schools primary education on the territory of Belarus during the 19th and early 20th centuries is considered. The development of primary education in the Russian Empire was discussed in the Government, Ministry, among the noble and educated people throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. The policy of the State in the sphere of primary national education was favorable to schools of the spiritual department, because exactly these schools corresponded to the requirements of the State to the education and upbring-ing of the common man. However, discontent with the results of activity of the church schools caused dissatisfaction. The reforms which had been implemented in the sphere of education were aimed to improve the quality of public education. As a result, by the early 20th century parish schools and reading and writing schools became the most common type of primary school.
