Abstract
The article is devoted to the novel A Fable by the Nobel laureate William Faulkner. Some connections of the work with the US war prose of the first half of the twentieth century are studied. The specifics of ‘continuous war’ motif is pointed out. It is observed how the writer related different narrative layers: unique and universal, historically founded and fictional. It is highlighted how biblical scenes reinterpretation, ‘streams of consciousness’ technique, combination of different temporal layers, ‘story within a story’ elements and intermittent narration helped to create an alternative space of the First World War.
