THE TOPOGRAPHY OF “THE SONG OF THE NIBELUNGS”

Abstract
The object of study is the historical, semi mythical and absolutely mythical scene of “The Song of the Nibelungs”. The analysis is based on the classification suggested by V.J. Schroder. Special attention is paid to the opposition of the “poles” of the poem: the mythical North and the historical South. At the same time some intermediate scene is detached. It is related to neither of the “poles” and is defined as semi mythical. Besides, the connection between the time and the place of the poem is taken into consideration in the research. As a result of this the time-classification is applicable to the place. Thus, the scene in “The Song of the Nibelungs” stands out in three substances: real historical scene of the end of the 12th cent., half-mythic scene of the heroic 5th cent., and ancient absolutely mythic one of the period of the legends about Siegfried, a maiden warrior Brunhild.
