THE CONCEPT OF LOVE IN GOETHE'S NOVELLA "THE MADWOMAN ON A PILGRIMAGE"

Abstract
The aim of this article is to present the Goethe's vision of the phenomenon of love on the material of the novella "The Madwoman on a Pilgrimage" from the novel "Wilhelm Meister’s Years of Travel". The author's interpretation of the problem is analyzed on the basis of the system of literary images and motives. Particular attention is paid to the differences between Goethe's translation and the French original. It is concluded that love in Goethe’s novella functions as a catalyst for the hero's deliverance from social conventions and the discovery of the person's essence.
