THE MOTIF OF SUFFERING AND ITS ARTISTIC EMBODIMENT IN THE BALLAD “THE THORN” BY W. WORDSWORTH

Abstract
A detailed analysis of the ballad “The Thorn” by W. Wordsworth based on the three levels of poetic work structure (phonic, stylistic, and conceptual) is done. Artistic means with the help of which the motif of suffering manifests itself are reviewed. The motif of suffering is considered to be a peculiar motif of the entire collection of poems “Lyrical Ballads”. A special role of the narrator in the ballad “The Thorn” is described. Also the connection between an image of the nature and an image of the main character Martha Ray is pointed out. A substantial basis of the ballad “The Thorn” is revealed and finds itself in the inner conflict of the main character of the ballad.
