Abstract
The article is devoted to the story ‘One Man’s Initiation – 1917’ by Jh. Dos Passos, which was the starting point of the author’s creative evolution. Using the autobiographic material the prose writer tried to portray American’s experience in the Old World during the First World War. The author reconsidered some devices typical to the Bildungsroman. It was done to record the breath of the epoch characterized by total destruction. The lexical unit ‘initiation’ given in the title showed the authors desire to connect some events that had finished not so long ago with ancient rituals. In new conditions they lost their sacral quality and obtained some features of absurdity and degeneration. The story has an antimilitary character.
