“CAPTIVE TROUBADOUR” AND THE NOBILITY OF COURLAND IN 1813: CULTURAL DIALOGUE IN THE MIDST OF THE WAR

Abstract
The article analyzes a manuscript collection of poetry by an unknown French officer who was prisoner in Government of Courland after 1812 War. Verses on several occasions both solemn and common make use of Troubadour style, typical of early nineteenth-century French poetry. The miscellanea bears witness to prisoner’s deep involvement in local sociability and his good contacts within local elites. It also shows his will to better understand Russian life. The mutual understanding of the prisoner and his hosts is based on the interest for French literature and the command of the norms of sociability set by French aristocratic culture and adopted in the Russian Empire at the turn of the 19th century. As a result, a particular group identity takes shape within the poetical conversation. Mediated through the international European language, this identity is not at variance with patriotic feelings nor impedes revelation of national cultural features.
